The College of St. Scholastica (CSS) is a private Benedictine college in Duluth, Minnesota. Founded in 1912 by a group of pioneering Benedictine Sisters, today St. Scholastica educates almost 4,000 students annually and has graduated more than 29,000 alumni. The college offers a liberal arts education and is located on 186 wooded acres overlooking Lake Superior.
CSS is committed to providing students with a rigorous academic experience that is grounded in the liberal arts tradition. The college offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and minors, as well as a variety of graduate programs. Students are also encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, such as student government, clubs, and intramural sports.
CSS is a member of the NCAA Division III Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The college sponsors 16 varsity sports, including football, basketball, hockey, and softball.
The college is also home to the Madeline Island School of the Arts, a summer program for high school students interested in the arts.
History
The College of St. Scholastica was founded in 1912 by a group of Benedictine Sisters from St. Mary's Abbey in Duluth. The sisters were led by Mother Scholastica Kersten, who served as the college's first president.
The college originally offered a two-year program of study leading to a diploma in liberal arts. In 1920, the college began offering a four-year program leading to a bachelor's degree. In 1930, the college was granted accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
In 1962, the college moved to its current location on 186 wooded acres overlooking Lake Superior. The new campus was designed by architect Ralph Rapson.
In 1992, the college became coeducational.
