Overview
The University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) is a public university in Pasadena and Houston, Texas, with branch campuses in Pearland and Texas Medical Center. It is part of the University of Houston System. Founded in 1971, UHCL had an enrollment of more than 9,000 students for fall 2019. The university serves students in four academic colleges. History
The University of Houston-Clear Lake was founded in 1971 as the University of Houston at Clear Lake City. The university was established as a result of the Higher Education Coordinating Board's (HECB) decision to create a new university in the Clear Lake area. The HECB selected the University of Houston to be the lead institution in the development of the new university.
The university's first classes were held in the fall of 1971. The university's original campus was located in Clear Lake City. In 1974, the university's name was changed to the University of Houston-Clear Lake. In 1977, the university opened a branch campus in Pearland.
