In 1872, the Virginia General Assembly established the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (VAMC) as a land-grant college to provide instruction in agriculture, mechanic arts, and military science. VAMC and VMI were located in the same town of Lexington, Virginia, and shared some facilities.
In 1904, the General Assembly merged VAMC and VMI into a single institution called the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). The new institution offered both civilian and military programs, and its students were required to participate in the Corps of Cadets.
In 1964, the General Assembly changed the name of the institution to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI&SU). The university continued to offer both civilian and military programs, but the Corps of Cadets became an optional program for students.
