

David L. Garin
Dr. David L. Garin is a distinguished Emeritus Professor from the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science degree from the City College of New York, followed by a Ph.D. from Iowa State University. Further honing his expertise, Dr. Garin undertook post-doctoral fellowships at the prestigious Weizmann Institute of Science and Indiana University, which paved the way for his long-standing association with UMSL, starting in 1966. Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Garin made significant contributions to the field of chemistry, particularly in the areas of heterocyclic aromatic ethers and the synthesis of beta-triones. His research has been pivotal in advancing the understanding of chemical and electrochemical reduction processes. Additionally, Dr. Garin has been a strong advocate for integrating workshop chemistry into educational practices, emphasizing its importance in enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. From 1987 to 1998, Dr. Garin served as the Director of the Center for Science and Technology at UMSL, where he played a crucial role in fostering interdisciplinary research and collaboration. His commitment to science policy was further demonstrated during his participation in the Congressional Science Fellow program in Washington, D.C., in 1980-81, where he contributed to shaping science-related legislative initiatives. Even after his retirement in 1999, Dr. Garin has remained actively involved in the scientific community.
