Jefferson Gatrall
Jefferson Gatrall's projects emphasize collaborative solutions for bridging the gap between literature and other cultural spheres. As an Associate Professor of World Languages and Cultures at Montclair State University, he brings a unique interdisciplinary approach to his work. Gatrall also serves as the Director of the Medical Humanities and the Coordinator of the Russian Program, roles that allow him to explore the intersections of language, culture, and medicine. His research interests are deeply rooted in 19th-century novels from Russia, Western Europe, and the United States. Gatrall is particularly fascinated by how modern fiction interacts with broader cultural elements such as medicine, visual art, and religion. This interest has led him to publish two books and numerous articles and book chapters, delving into topics like Chekhov and medicine, as well as the works of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Gatrall's scholarly contributions extend beyond traditional literary analysis. His work on Russian icons and their cultural significance highlights his commitment to understanding the multifaceted nature of literature and its impact on society. By examining the connections between literature and visual art, he offers fresh perspectives on how these mediums influence and reflect cultural values. In his role as Director of the Medical Humanities, Gatrall fosters an environment where students and faculty can explore the humanistic aspects of medicine. His leadership in this area underscores the importance of integrating the humanities into medical education, promoting a more holistic understanding of healthcare. Through his teaching and research, Jefferson Gatrall continues to inspire students and colleagues alike to consider the broader implications of literature and its role in shaping cultural and societal norms. His dedication to interdisciplinary study not only enriches the academic community at Montclair State University but also contributes to a deeper appreciation of the interconnectedness of human knowledge.
